How effective do you think banner advertising is these days? I guess it depends on how spammy the banners or the site looks that a user visits. Banner blindness can come into play sometimes, but I guess it must work otherwise people wouldn't do it.

Hi Shaun and welcome...

Yes you a completely right many people think it is as easy as putting up a website and the traffic will come. With no research and no thought at all put into what it is they want to achieve. I have had many clients that have been in this exact situation where they have paid thousands of dollars to other web designers for a website only to find it sitting 100 pages back in Google, no traffic no sales.

If you have researched first then they would have known that the web design and marketing should be a package because both are useless with out the other.

You need to research ask the right questions and even go as far as trying to determine if you product is in a buyers market before you ever put your hand in your pocket.

Nice article. You hit the nail on the head when you talk about relevance being the key. Marketing has always been about right people, right message, right time.

So many people fail to realise this, and simply book a campaign and send it out to hunt, rather than spending more time researching their position and niche.

They seem to think that somehow the laws of marketing don't apply to the web.
