Working From Home As A Virtual Assistant

It seems they’re outsourcing everything these days, and work that used to be called “secretarial” is no exception, with many now opting to be a virtual assistant.
What Is A Virtual Assistant
People who once did secretarial work, those who most recently have been renamed as administrative assistants, are now going online and working from home as virtual assistants.
Nor is virtual assistant work limited only to this type of function; these people can also be graphic artists, accountants, and others who have formerly been considered white collar office workers.
Think about it.
How much of that type of work done by such people absolutely has to be done on-site in an office?
With almost all work and record-keeping placed online or done in electronic form these days, there isn’t much location-specific work left.
Even meetings can be handled via speaker phone or video conference, and already a great deal of communication within a business is done by email or on the phone. Much of a company’s typing, research, data entry, word processing, bookkeeping, and design can be done online, and it doesn’t matter that much where the actual computer terminal resides.
Even if most large companies still want to maintain a physical office, there are still countless small businesses, single entrepreneurs, and consultants who may not be capable of doing their own administrative work. This might be because they are too busy doing their actual work, or they simply don’t know how to manage those things themselves.
How To Use A Virtual Assistant
This is where the virtual assistant comes in.
This person can be hired for a few hours a week to do basic things for a single consultant, or can work full-time for a company or large group. All of the work is done at home, on the assistant’s own equipment, and he or she just needs to commit to being available during the hours their client needs them.
The basic requirements for doing such job are, of course, a computer and phone, as well as a printer and probably a fax as well. What computer programs or other equipment the assistant needs will depend on what services they plan to offer.
They are responsible for maintaining their own equipment and having the programs necessary to do the job, whether these are word processing and spreadsheet programs or accounting and graphics software.
There are several advantages in this sort of work, for both the virtual assistant and the client. For one thing, as long as the assistant is self-disciplined and gets the work done, he or she can work in their pajamas and nobody would ever know. They won’t have to get up as early to get ready for work.
This can be a way of staying home with the kids and still being employed. For many people, this is a “best of both worlds” kind of scenario.
For the client, the initial benefit is getting all their work done without the costs of renting office space and maintaining equipment. They are also freed from worrying about the usual government contributions required from an employer, not to mention things like vacation and sick pay. They can also hire the assistant for whatever time periods they actually need them.
This type of work can be advantageous for someone who enjoys administrative work but doesn’t like going in to an office and everything that entails. Being a virtual assistant is a type of home based business that brings in good compensation without a lot of the typical office bother.

This can be a great idea when outsourcing the work too. We had some support help from China I think it was over the Internet, worked great and was really cheap. Perfect for answering simple questions or sending higher up if the questions is a hard one…
Hi Nisse
Yes you are right outsourcing for bigger business is very effective, however you really need to test the system out first as you will find some of these that are not suitable for your needs even though they are within your budget. Other places you can consider are the Philippines and also India when looking to employ a virtual Assistant.
Yes, it seems that they’re outsourcing everything these days. Virtual assistants have been the latest trend in online jobs being offered. The pay is quite good too and best of all, you get to work at home in your jammies.
My husband runs a business of his own and he’s been thinking of getting a virtual assistant and it does make a lot of sense in many ways but the thing is, sometimes you want that presence in your office, to welcome people in and be a part of the staff force. Also, it seems if you have an emergency and you need the secretary to do something outside of their duty you can still ask them if they’re there.
I’ve been very lucky with my Virtual Assistant job. My boss is understanding and cool. One thing I dont like about it though, is when he forwards his calls to me. Rarely, but it still happens. I feel like its not really my forte, taking calls.

The longer I stay at home, the less qualified I feel that I would be in any job. Being unemployed does absolutely nothing for your confidence, not to mention any interviews you have to go on, only to be told that they’ve chosen someone else. You’re left thinking, “What’s wrong with me, I’m an excellent worker.” Then you rationalize. “Well, they’re just stupid,” “They probably wanted a brainless Barbie,” whatever — and, at the end of the day, you’re still at home, unemployed and broke. {Bummer|thanks for giving us this Working From Home as a Virtual Assistant : Marketing Tilt page, I needed a place to vent|get it all off my chest.
I agree with you. My wife is a virtual assistant for almost 2 years now and she find her job very rewarding at the same time her employer is very happy with her work.

Definitely true. The only downside is the security of this jobs since you are not actually working at a company there’s a big chance that you’ll get fired or worst not get paid on time.
